I returned to the scene of the operation on Friday. A neighbor had his hip replaced, not resurfaced, at the Hospital for Special Surgery on Wednesday, so I stopped by for a visit. He’s in his mid to late 60s but looked like he was much stronger than I was two day post surgery. He did not have any of the nausea, dizziness, or headaches that I had, and was having no problem walking around on crutches. Needless to say, I was jealous.
Stepping Up the Intensity–or Not
December 8, 2009Here is the dilemma: I am able to walk, unaided, with relative ease and without pain. So when do I start to start to increase my level of rehabilitation. I suppose I should wait until next week when I visit Dr. Su’s physician’s assistant, but I am eager to get going now. I work around the corner from a YMCA but do not really care for swimming, weights, or gyms all that much. I would like to resume Yoga but am not sure I have the flexibility, strength, or stamina to make it through a class. Read the rest of this entry »
All Cane, All the Time
November 26, 2009I just returned from a 1+ mile walk with just a cane, my first trip without a crutch. I took my time and made sure my steps was short. Overall, a pleasant journey. I think I may be ready to ditch the crutches. For that I am grateful. Happy Thanksgiving.

Meet the New Video; Same as the Old Video
November 18, 2009I am fairly sure that this video of an operation by Dr. Bose is posted elsewhere, too. But it’s already gotten 25 comments in one day on this site. Blood and gore is a big hit, I guess.
Carla’s Corner
October 20, 2009I just discovered a similar blog to this one, also hosted by WordPress. Check out Carla’s Corner.
Revolt of the Hippies
October 1, 2009The surface hippy community is up in arms over this article–particularly its conclusion that the “gold-standard treatment for painful, disabling hip arthritis for the vast majority of patients” continues to be a total hip replacement, not a hip resurfacing. But isn’t this much ado about not much?
Hip Resurfacing on Facebook
September 30, 2009I guess it should not be surprising, but there are several pages devoted to hip resurfacing on Facebook. Here is one devoted to Birmingham hip resurfacing with 107 members, the largest I found. None of them are as informative as the surfacehippy group on Yahoo, which has nearly 8,500 members, but if Facebook is where you spend your time, you can find company.
