The New Hip

My apologies if you reached this page hoping to find a dissertation on the new Kerouac or Ginsberg. We are talking about the original type of “hip,” the ball-and-socket joint that joins the leg with the torso. These are the components that that were inserted into my right hip on Nov. 2 in a resurfacing operation.

By contrast, this is a traditional femoral component used in a total hip replacement.
Traditional new hip (the ball, not the socket)

The difference between the two types of operations–in lay terms–is that the ball is preserved and capped in a resurfacing while it is literally sawed off and replaced in a replacement. It is sort of like the difference between a crown and dentures.
